Covid delay and open thread, talk amongst yourselves this week

I’m on Day 5 of Covid over here, and while I’m feeling a bit better each day, I’m also discovering that the virus’s patented brain fog is not conducive to witty, insightful news analysis, or whatever is it I’m usually doing here. (You should see how long it took me to type that sentence, for example.)

Accordingly, I’m calling in sick to this site for the rest of this week, unless something so momentous happens that it absolutely can’t wait. For the lesser news items, please feel free to use the comments section as an open thread, and we can hopefully all return to normal on Monday.

  1. Get better soon, NdeM. P.S. The only time I feel like a Communist is when I read about the stadium scams.

  2. CALEB hosted a public meeting to discuss a CBA related to the Chattanooga Lookouts proposed and approved $80M stadium. The organization has 2 weeks to agree with the team owners. Any experience on last-minute, tactics when there’s no real leverage left?

  3. Reports are Arte Moreno may be looking at selling the Angels. I guess that means the whole saga of a new stadium and other development on that land begins anew…

  4. Coyotes, and their major sponsor, are now ancient history, as new arena naming rights have been announced.

  5. Neil – I wasn’t sure what to make of “brain fog” until I had it. It was intense. I found myself not being able to do relatively simple arithmetic, and I certainly couldn’t think quickly. I didn’t even realize I had it until it started lifting for me, somewhere around day 5 or so. Hopefully you’ll get out of it soon!

    1. I’m reminded of that old Hitchhiker’s Guide bit about the effects of teleportation: “It’s unpleasantly like being drunk.” “What’s so unpleasant about being drunk?” “You ask a glass of water.”

  6. Get well soon! We need some updates on this miami stadium saga. First MLS, now the university. That’s soon to be three major football stadiums in one city!

  7. Will all participants be required to have mullets?

This will be a great look for the Coyotes and the NHL.

    1. Incidentally, everyone should familiarize themselves with the annual Minnesota High School Hockey All-Hair Team videos on youtube.

    2. The Coyotes should come out with a third jersey with Joe Dirt’s picture on it, instead of their logo.

    3. I take it this means Melrose will be coach in the near future…

      Sympathies on the ‘fog’ Neil.

  8. Rest up Neil and get well soon. My family, myself included, had in back in May. All will be well.

  9. Get plenty of rest! I lost ten pounds on the covid diet, AND had the fog. Not sure where I’m supposed to send my thank you note for such a bountiful gift.

    1. Whereas I have so many people to thank — the mayor who issued a back-to-offices order without requiring masking, the governor who refuses to enforce mask rules on the subways, the douchebros at the Beths concert who were shouting their spittle all over us — that I’m going to have to order more stationery.

      1. Hey that comment seemed more like the Neil that everyone comes to the site to hear. Provided you didn’t take 70 minutes to write the reply. Fog lifts when the sun is out. Hopefully the sun is shining your way.

You are doing a great service (way more than the douchebros). Hopefully your PBS appeals keeps the internet on and allows you to do other things.

Since this has become a little community (somewhat) and you are doing so much of the heavy lifting, why not offer commentors a chance to give a blurb about themselves for a donation? Charge by the word.

        1. Fog slowly lifting, thanks, though the lollipops keep coming back positive.

And explain what you mean by blurbs? Do you mean something attached to your screen name? I haven’t asked people to sign in to accounts here before commenting because it always seemed like an unnecessary hurdle, but I can change that pretty easily, I think.

          1. By blurb I mean a short bio. Make it a Neilathon.

Sorry I’m in New England and the sports radio weei has been fundraising (for the Jimmy Fund) so it got me thinking. Yes that’s dangerous.

          2. What I really need at this point are streaming video recommendations, since I have, as John Oliver once put it, hit the end screen of Netflix.

      2. enjoy your site and views, agree w/ most of it. hope you are feeling better everyday…but really, your masking comments? puleeze. i guess if it makes you feel better, vent…

        1. What would make me feel better would be other people taking my health into consideration during a public health crisis, but to each their own, I guess.
