Santa Clara group starts petition drive, is upstaged by blown power line
As promised, Santa Clara Plays Fair has launched a referendum campaign to block $850 million in city loans to fund a new San Francisco 49ers stadium. If they can collect 6,000 signatures within 30 days, a public vote could be held ... okay, I'm not exactly sure, so I'm going to go with "in the future."
The community group, though, couldn't even get top billing in the lede of the San Francisco Chronicle article about its own petition drive, which instead began:
The power outages at Candlestick Park this week were a visible reminder of why the 49ers want to move to a new stadium in Santa Clara.
Yes, that's right: The 49ers want a new stadium because the old one has crappy splices on the power lines outside, which led to two power outages during Monday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Me, I'd just ask for new power lines, but I guess that's because I lack the vision to be an NFL owner.
Well, the SF Examiner article notes that Candlestick Park is currently in a "haggard state", so surely that means that the 49ers owners deserve to have someone else build them a free stadium right away.
Posted by Christine Fry on December 22, 2011 04:27 PMI thought that Oklahoma was the Haggard state?
Posted by Neil deMause on December 22, 2011 04:34 PMI think the only way SCPF can really pull this off is if they ally with a group trying to get an NFL team in LA.

Posted by Bill on December 22, 2011 05:22 PMWhoops! Sorry about the double post.
Posted by Bill on December 22, 2011 05:23 PMSanta Clara Plays Fair, you have my moral support.
I only ask for yours in return.
Happy Holidays, everyone!
Posted by MikeM on December 22, 2011 05:45 PMCandlestick opened in 1960. It was designed for baseball, not football. Have you been inside lately? The 49ers need a new stadium. But so do the Raiders. Why can't they agree to share a new stadium, like the Jets and Giants?
Posted by bobster1985 on December 22, 2011 06:44 PMThe 49ers might "need" a new stadium. But no one to date has made the case why this should be my problem.
A power outage doesn't make it Santa Clara's problem. Their need for a new stadium is easily solved ... PAY FOR IT YOURSELVES! There is no reason why any public funds from any source should built a stadium for the SF 49ers!
I just donated ... and I encourage others to go to www.santaclaraplaysfair.com and make a donation. This group is really hangin' it out there and deserves the financial support that they need. Anything, large or small will make a difference and a statement that we want the San Francisco 49ers to STAY in SFO. Besides it will be cheaper than the PSLs they're going to be selling for big bucks.

NO. I do NOT want the 49ers to stay in SFO. I don't want them ANYWHERE in the Bay Area.
Posted by Bill on December 23, 2011 04:04 AMI wouldn't put it past them to cut the power lines in time for the game....not that I believe that happened, of course.
Posted by Oakland Si on December 23, 2011 08:50 AMAs soon as the power went out,the first thing I thought of was that this will be used to show that Candlestick is falling apart and the 49ers need a new stadium. The second thought... was some sabatoge behind this?...Nat'l Prime Time game...coencidence?
Posted by Rob S on December 23, 2011 12:52 PMRob S., I also believe that the Whole event was Staged @ Candlestick Park for the Nation, & Bigwigs at the NFL to see. I personally Put NOTHING past the York Ownership!
Also seated in Jed Yorks Owners Box was Kevin Moore, and other Elected Santa Clara Officials, plus the Head of PG&E...Coincidental???? NO!
Everyone as soon as the lights went out had their "Talking Points Ready" and it wasn't that a PG&E Transformer Blew Up...It was That Candlestick Park was a Dump & the 49ers Need a New Stadium!
Never mind that Candlestick has been in "primetime" many times in its 51 years of existence, & NOTHING like this incident had NEVER occured! Coincidental? NO!
Question...Did the Media blame the city of San Bruno for the PG&E Pipeline Explosion, then why blame Candlestick for PG&E's Equipment Failure?
